*** As the elected Lieutenant Governor, Jane Swift became the Governor of Massachusetts on April 10, 2001 when Governor Paul Cellucci resigned to become the US Ambassador to Canada.

Also notable, in 2006 Governor Mitt Romney signed a bill requiring that all MA citizens obtain health insurance.
This historic legislation made MA the first state to tackle the problem of incomplete medical coverage.
